Upon solving quizzes, the student earns Math Dollars that can be used to gain access to Windows at a specified cost (Math Cents per minutes of access), or for other purposes. MathDollars are at parity with Canadian Dollars by default, but the value of Math Dollars can be set by the parent to any desired value, to match any other currency, by setting the amount of Math Dollars to be earned for each individual quiz type solved correctly.
Aside of spending the earned Math Dollars to get computer access time, the student can also withdraw Math Dollars from the current MathLanders account by printing them out on paper and using them as cash for various purposes. Thus, by solving math quizzes, the student can earn his/her own money to buy goods (toys, games) or services from the parent that otherwise would be usually given for free. In this process, the parent has the role of the bank, where the MathDollars bills printed out by the student are exchanged with real Canadian Dollars (or any other currency) from the parent. For more expensive goods (a bicycle, for example), a separate long-term savings account can be used where Math Dollars earned by solving math quizzes are wisely deposited in time for future use, rather than being spent (wasted) for computer access.
In MathLanders Settings module, the parent has total control over these accounts, meaning that he/she can deposit (rewards, for example) or withdraw (fines) any amounts at any time. Also, the overall amount of MathDollars earned by the student can be adjusted by the parent by setting the individual earnings per quiz solved at a desired amount.
By means of earning Math Dollars, various strategies can be used by each family to control student's activities and behavior.
